Last weekend the Felling Band travelled all the way down to North Wales to compete in the Harry Mortimer Brass Band Championships held at Pontins in Prestatyn.
Over the past few weeks the full band have worked incredibly hard on the set test piece ‘Montage’ by composer Peter Graham. The piece is made up of three movements each of which are fiendishly difficult pushing every player in the band to their extreme.
The band played on draw number 12 and came away with the 4th Prize trophy together with prize money of £450. Full results courtesy of 4barsrest as follows: -

Particular thanks go to our talented conductor Graeme Tindall. Graeme has put in a considerable amount of time and effort over the past few weeks to ensure the band played to their full potential. This left the adjudicators David Horsfield and Alan Morrison to decide we were worthy of 4th place.
We are also grateful towards Steve Malcolm, Les Palmer, Matthew Hunt, Julie Parkin and Gaz Sykes who helped us out over the weekend during absence of our usual players.
The band is now preparing a varied concert program for the forthcoming concerts scheduled on the engagement list. We are also starting to rehearse the test piece ‘Ballet for Band’ by composer Joseph Horovitz. This is in preparation for this years Durham League Contest held in Peterlee on Sunday 22nd November.

This weekend has seen the band in (not so) sunny Blackpool for the Spring Festival Contest. The band traveled down Friday evening to make a late rehearsal at the Hilton Hotel before relaxing over a few drinks in the hotel bar.
Bright and early Saturday morning we got the bus to a local church for a rehearsal and anxiously waited for the band’s Chairman, Colin Brewis to relay the draw results. Although there was a long wait ahead the band in general were pleased with being drawn 19th. After a short rehearsal and a photo shoot for the band profile page on the website the band headed to the Winter Gardens!
Following our performance of Gilbert Vinter’s Spectrum, we all felt we played well in front of the adjudicators Malcolm Brownbill and David Read particularly the main soloists David Scholes, Yvonne Malcolm and Trevor Winch.
Following all 20 performances the adjudicators had decided to place us 15th over all. The full results were: -
Acknowledgement should go to our percussion section, Amy Malcolm, Matthew Hunt and Jason Smith. Amy has been working very hard on Spectrum over the past few weeks all by herself. Matthew and Jason kindly stepped in last minute to help Amy out as she didn’t have enough arms to manage all the parts!
